Methane Production

Methane - Not Annoying But Energy

In the midwest methane and cattle or pig farms are the largest producer of methane but can also become one of the largest producers of energy by capturing the methane and converting it into an energy source. Several large meat production facilities are doing the same thing turning the waste from the livestovk into an energy source that cuts their fuel costs.

In 2017, methane (CH4) accounted for about 10.2 percent of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.

Human activities emitting methane include leaks from natural gas systems and the raising of livestock.

A Brief Explanation

Methane is produced in natural environments by the decay of plant and wildlife. It also occurs around dams and other bodies of water that are stagnant such as wetlands.

It is estimated that if places such as landfills recovered this methane gas it could power nearly a half million homes and that is an underestimate. Many landfills are discovering this naturally occuring event and are installing methane recovery systems such as biodigesters and recovery tanks.

In order to recover this gas they put tubes into the ground that absorb the methane before it reaches the surface. In a livestock production operation the manure is scooped up and put into a tank then mixed with water and deprived of oxygen. The result is a methane gas mix that is purified or scrubbed to make it pure and remove sulphur dioxide and other harmful chemicals. It is then put into storage tanks for use on the farm or sold as a fuel source.

The abil;ity to convert this gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supplements our energy needs. For more information on biodigesters Visit This Link. For more information on methane and other greenhouse gas emissions Visit This Site.

At True Organic Technology we implement biodigesters to handle our effluent and reduce waste and add energy sources to our facilities and communites.
